Ask the Genealogist

Question:

I am looking for help to find the birth record of Robert Lee Smith, born Aug. 2, 1868, in Chariton Co., Mo., and died on May 9, 1919, in Barton County, Missouri. Place of burial was Brasuer Cemetery.

Answer:

To find a record of his birth, you can look at multiple records. For example, look at his death certificate. It is online at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/

Notice that this official record gives his birth date as 2 August 1868.

To find a contemporary record of his birth—one created at the time of his birth—you want to search the old newspapers and church registers.

Try searching in GenealogyBank's online newspaper archives, limiting your search to Missouri newspapers in 1868.

Then focus on church registers from that period. Look for the record where his birth/baptism was registered.
