GORISEK The legend of the Penin sula Python has been re vived after 22 years. A new generation of Pen insula citizens—fourth-grade pupils at Boston Elementa ry School—wanted to know more about the python. One girl brought up the story when the class was study ing folklore. When teacher Sally Keeler could not answer young sters’ questions, she called in area experts. John B. Ritch, village mayor in the 1940s, and Mrs. Franklin E. Fleder, historian, responded. THEY TOLD HOW, in the hot summer of 1944, the python first was reported on farms in the village. At least five people said they saw it—a huge snake about 18 feet long with a head as large as a human’s.- Some people said they saw its tracks. Others said tracks could be made by ' dragging a tire through fields. Newspapers • were full of grim war news, and editors snatched up the tale of Peninsula people chasing the python, Mrs. Fleder said. It made papers around the country, and was played up .for weeks. It was even picked up by “Stars and Stripes” overseas editions. The yarn faded that au tumn as cold weather closed in. Pythons are used to more moderate weather. “SOME DAY,” Mrs. Fle der told the children, “you might find the coiled skele ton in a rock near here. You’ll know it is the py thon J’ But Mayor Ritch re mains unconvinced. “I couldn’t say there was a python, and I couldn’t say there was not one,” the for mer mayor said.
