Music video trend hits LV *This type of programming is the way of the future. It appeals not only to the young but also to the young-at-heart. It is no longer sufficient just to listen to music when you can see artists’ interpretations of their hits on your TV. ’ — Frank Scott By Carol Cling Review-Journal The mushrooming video music phenomenon has spread to South ern Nevada with “Vusic 21,” Las Vegas’ first UHF television station, which goes on the air next month with non-pay music videos 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Plans for the station — known in more formal broadcasting terms as KRLR-TV, Channel 21 — were un veiled during a Monday news con ference by Frank, Charlene and Rick Scott. Their DRES Media Inc., a Scott Family Enterprise, will own and operate the station. “It is clear that music video is not just a passing fad. It’s here to stay,” said Frank Scott, chairman of the board of DRES Media and the Union Plaza Hotel. “This type of programming is the way of the future. It appeals not only to the young but also to the young-at- heart. It is no longer sufficient just to listen to music when you can see artists’ interpretations of their hits on your TV.” Despite Scott’s statement, sta tion promotional material plays up the format’s appeal to select target markets in the 12-to-34 age groups. The first new commercial TV station in Las Vegas in 16 years, Vusic 21 will boast Southern Neva da’s most powerful broadcast sig nal, 400,000 watts, to be transmit ted from an antenna on Black Mountain. That signal will reach almost 210,000 television house holds, station officials predict. Area residents will be able to re ceive the station through cable or with a small antenna, to be avail able at local 7-Eleven convenience stores for 99 cents. The station will feature hourly updates of local and national news, plus concert information, inter views with rock musicians, live “VJs” (as opposed to old-fashioned disc jockeys), a local request line and other promotions. Station President Charlene Scott likened the format to listening to a rock radio station, “but the pic tures are free.” She said station officials hoped to have Vusic 21 on the air by mid- July, with local VJs programming their own shows with videos pro vided by various record companies. Although Vusic 21 will be the only non-pay music TV station in Nevada, there are three similar sta tions already on the air nationwide and 30 more waiting to begin broadcasting, Charlene Scott said. “It’s the hottest thing going,” she said, adding that station owners thought music video’s popularity would prompt Southern Nevadans to take the additional trouble to buy and install UHF antennas for something “hot, new and different. It’s a good marketing tool.” In addition, she said the video format enabled the station to “get on the air quickly,” within the two- month deadline set by the Federal Communications Commission. “It was a combination of marketing and being able to get on the air in a short period of time.” Rick Scott will serve as the sta tion’s general manager.
