Description: Mag 20; WTLV, WCWJ, WJXT
Gannett enters area TV market (Continued from Page 13) the long run, you may see high er advertising rates for the No. 2 and 3 stations, and relatively the same rates for WJXT." Effect on Jacksonville Although no one is predicting a boon to Jacksonville’s econo my because of Gannett’s move, there could be subtle effects. Jacksonville could benefit di~ • rectly from Gannett’s presence because the company has a reputation for being involved in the communities in which it op erates, Ms. Brook said. “I think that is where you will see the most immediate atten tion — supporting community interests,’’ she said. “Harte- Hanks’ philosophy is consistent with that, but with Gannett you will probably see it on a larger scale.” Sheila Gibbons, manager of public affairs for Gannett, said money from the company’s Gannett, Foundation will be come available to Jacksonville charitable, education and civic programs once the company has ownership of WTLV, Last year, the Gannett Foundation made $28 million in grants in the cities in which it operates, she said. According to Arthur “Chick” Sherrer, executive vice presi dent of the Jacksonville Cham ber of Commerce, Gannett’s presence also could boost eco nomic development efforts on Jacksonville. “Any time you get a major corporation of that magnitude to move in, that says a lot about Jacksonville,” he said. Corporations, Sherrer said, study a city’s media before de ciding to move operations to a new location. Although not a deciding factor, the quality and professionalism of a city’s busi ness reporting is considered, he said. "With the addition of Gannett, the quality of the business and news reporting m Jacksonville will increase," he said. Kelley, the former general manager of TV-12, agreed Gan nett’s presence will be a plus for business development. "It speaks well of the quality of the Jacksonville television market to have Gannett, Post- Newsweek and Media General here, for this size town," he said. “I think that’s an attrac tive attribute as far as luring other companies to Jackson ville." ’87 BUICK SOMERSETS *189 9S e >9695 • Power Windows • Power Door Locks • Air Conditioned • Automatic • Tilt • Cassette • Power Antenna BUICK 642-6060 4660 SOUTHSIDE BLVD.
