8 C vllir Dali.ex iHiuniuu N’aiij Tiu -dav. February. 5 :. Osn PENA PEDERSON Channel 39 wants to be good broadcast sport C HANNEL 39 IS forging ahead with its ex panded sports lineup, hoping hi :;mn '.eider public acceptance with new programs such as the TV 39 Sports Magazine The second KXTX-TY sports magazine pro gram has been scheduled lor Feb In Irom ' p in until midnight. including a mixture ot live sports and interviews Anchored by Dallas sportscaster Fiank Gheber and KXTX sjiorts coordinator Frank Filesi, the magazine will hopscotch between liw teeds from the regional Golden Gloves Cham pionship in Fort Worth to the SMC-Texas Tech basketball game in Lubbock There also will be taped highlights Irom the Southwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Irom the Tarrant County Conven tion Center in Fort Worth and the SMl’-Texas swim meet at SMC. THEN AT 10 P.M. the station will carry the Stanford California basketball game live from California "It's an all-sports evening." Filesi said ' What we re trying to do is borrow a page liom the net works — we're going after areas of sports that you don't see much on the evening news We re trying to give the segments a live feeling. and we re trying to make them personal "We ll be going behind the scenes as often as we can. to talk to the athletes, find out about the person as well as the event." Files! said The first edition of the sports anthology the first prime-time sports magazine m the market, debuted m December with a potpourri of stories about lormer Dallas Cowboy Thomas ' Holly wood" Henderson, a boxing match with Fd "Too Tall" Jones, an interview with Houston Oiler Fai l Campbell, an SMI swim meet, the World Gymnas tic Championships in Fort Worth and a women's basketball game m Nacogdoches THERE WERE SOME technical i;litches and gaps. to be expected with a first venture into the haphazard world of mixed live and tape program ming But the interviews were generally profes sional and informative, eliciting a ripple of favor able response m the media The task tor the small sports stall at Channel 39 is to improve the program and generate a fol lowing and advertising base, so the program will eventually pay for itself "It has to pay tor itself because our sports budget has been cut back." Filesi said “We think it will, if done properly and given enough time to develop " He said securing Gheber as host for the show should help establish the program's credibility, since Gheber has a respected reputation in local and national sports circles Contributing sportscasters include Ron Spain, another well- known local sportscaster. former Dallas Cowboy John Niland. and WFA.-VAM sports director Bill Hazen Plans are in the works to expand the scope of the program's coverage, perhaps by adding re ports from sports personalities with broadcasting experience, such as Lynn Swann of the Pitts burgh Steelers and Sparky Anderson, manager of the Detroit Tigers THE CHANNEL 39 sports crew recently taped a racquetball tournament in Las Vegas with A1 Oliver of the Texas Rangers and Rafael Septien of the Dallas Cowboys and will lilm special inter views behind the scenes of the Avon Classic Ten nis Tournament in Dallas "Eventually we'd like to cut the program to one hour and syndicate it." Filesi said. "We have several stations interested." And in the meantime, Channel 39 hopes to use the sports magazine to draw viewers who may have written the station ofl because ol its relig ious programming identification The station is owned by the Christian Broadcasting Network, but it has broadened its program offerings in the past lew months to attract a wider audience "We're trving to get the secular audience to try Channel 39 and maybe stick around long enough for Pat Robertson's message to hold them," Filesi said "We also feel a far-ranging sports program is needed in the market and. if done properly, can contribute to the appreciation and enjoyment of sports We re going to be trying to do a program a month, and we hope we'll be doing some pretty special things " I j Frank Filesi s^V ' * The lovely lingerie you want... priced less than you expect! ||l|| e/rTT \ Hi It's so P rett V- \j?
