This.company is: owned by' H.; Lr Crav ens, a real estate and -insurance man in Brownwood, Texas, since 1932 and formerly vice president of the Con tinental Life Insurance company of America. Late in 1952, representatives of the Southwestern Publishing com pany and Las’ - Vegas" Television Inc.. met and discussed the .possi bility of joining forces on the ap plication for channel 8 with, a - view to expediting the construction of a station serving this = area. These negotiations progressed _ satisfac torily and-were nearing consum mation when-a local radio com mentator announced them on the air. " " ; - ; Within two days of the broadcast. Hank Greenspun filed an applica tion for channel_ 8 only; a short time before consideration of the Las Vegas applications ;was due by the FCC._This wa.v the channel already applied for by Southwest ern Publishing company and Las Vegas Television Inc. Greenspun listed his anticipated cost of construction as $69,800. Because .there .were, conflicting applications on both-Las Vegas channels, the commission-then by passed ’ Las Vegas, following its adopted procedure-of considering only cities in which there was no contest.
