Political News & Elections Search Tips

Use this search to find articles containing news about politics and election returns in the historical newspaper archives. This online collection contains political news and election results as published in U.S. newspapers from 1707–1996.

Broad Political News Search

Search for political and election news about a particular candidate or official by entering their name in the First Name and Last Name fields.

Search Election Results

You can search for election results by typing the words "election results" in quotation marks in the Include Keywords field.

Search Political Party News

You can search for political news about a political party or particular location by typing the name in the Include Keywords field. If you are using more than one word in your query, surround the phrase with quotation marks.

Example:

"Federalist"

"Washington D.C."

You can put your political news articles in chronological order. At the top of the search results page on the upper right hand side there is a drop-down menu. Select "Oldest Items." This will order the search results from the oldest article to the newest.
