Marriage Records Search Tips

Use this search to find announcements for engagements and weddings in the historical newspaper archives. This online collection contains marriage records as published in U.S. newspapers from 1714–1999.

Broad Marriage Record Search

Try searching for marriage announcements with the surname of one spouse in the Surname field and the other surname in the Include Keywords field. Follow up by searching only the groom’s surname.

Additional Tips to Search Marriage Records

Try to think of information that may have appeared in the original marriage announcement and use those terms. Do you know the name of the clergy member performing the wedding, or the name of the religious denomination? If so, focus your search on those terms.

Example:

"Lutheran" in the Include Keywords field and a Date Range of "1878."

You may also try entering the name of the church or chapel where the wedding ceremony was held in the Include Keywords field.
