Feature Article: GenealogyBank Celebrates the 150th Anniversary of Kansas Statehood
Abolitionists won the fierce struggle, and Kansas was admitted into the Union as the 34th state on Jan. 29, 1861, as a free state. By that time six states had already seceded from the Union. In all, eleven states ended up seceding and forming the Confederate States of America, and the nation plunged into a civil war. For Kansas, however, the fighting had already been going on for seven long years.
